Most of us know the horrific stories of how slavery in the American South wrenched Black families apart.  But did you ever stop to think about what happened after the Civil War ended, and whether any of these families were able to reconnect?  With limited literacy, few resources, and certainly without 21st century social media, how could all this happen?  The author of this novel weaves imaginative contemporary story threads with historical evidence of real people who pursued such reunification during the Reconstruction era.  Fans of historical fiction will find much to admire in this well-researched blend of heartbreak and determined optimism.
